Bidvest Wits coach Gavin Hunt believes his side controlled most of the match against Kaizer Chiefs following their 2-1 victory at the Bidvest Stadium on Tuesday.

The Clever Boys secured a 2-1 victory against Amakhosi in their opening Absa Premiership match of the season by goals from Elias Pelembe and Thulani Hlatshwayo.

However, Chiefs defender Lorenzo Gordinho reduced the deficit to 2-1 in the 82nd minute from a William Twala free-kick.

The 52-year-old coach believes his side were in control of the game of most of the match and he insists his side did what they set out to do and get the win.

‘To be fair I thought we controlled the game and could have made it really safe with the final ball especially in the first half,’ Hunt told SuperSport after the match.

‘They are a good side and they play football but we did what we had to do and we move forward.’

Hunt admits that he played Hellings Mhango on the wing instead of his centre-forward position to exploit the Amakhosi defence out wide.

‘I played Mhango wide today – it’s not his position but I knew that’s where the space was for us,’ he added.

‘In the first half he kept drifting in and I said to him: “stay wide, stay wide, you’ll get the ball and we can hurt them there.” That right fullback gets really high and the space is there game in and game out.’

Bidvest Wits will now welcome Orlando Pirates to the Bidvest Stadium for their opening MTN8 clash on Saturday.

Kick-off has been set for 20:15.
