Dustin Johnson’s new putter didn’t take long to start working. The US Open champion shot 31 on the back nine of Crooked Stick Golf Club on his way to course-record 63 to co-lead the BMW Championship.
‘I just grabbed one of these putters and started rolling it and Itsy Bitsy Spider, it’s a smaller Spider, the same one Jason Day uses. I played with him the last two weeks and saw him make enough putts and I was like, well, I got to try one at least. So I put it in play and been rolling it pretty good,’ he said.
The world number two reached the midway point of the $8,5-million tournament on 14-under-par, joined by Roberto Castro in a share of first place.
Johnson eagled the ninth and 15<sup>th</sup> holes during his round, which also included five birdies and no dropped shots.

He is projected to top the FedEx Cup standings with a victory this week, pole position ahead of the 30-man Tour Championship at East Lake in a fortnight’s time, after which the points leader gets a bonus cheque for $10-million.
South Africa’s Louis Oosthuizen shot 69 at the rain-softened Indian course to share 19th place on four-under-par. He was joined by countryman Charl Schwartzel, who has recorded consecutive 70s in the first two days.
