George Lebese’s penalty helped Chiefs to a win at Highlands Park while Golden Arrows scored an injury time goal to defeat Free State Stars.

Lebese’s 65th minute penalty which proved to be decisive will come a sweet relief to coach Steve Komphela as it means Amakhosi have finally secured a league win.

The match, played in front of almost 10 000 people in Balfour Park, was closely fought with the hosts holding their illustrious guests goalless at the break.

Allan Freese’s side gave as good as they got in the opening exchanges but Itumeleng Khune and Ramahlwe Mphalele did well to cope with the threat posed by Collins Mbesuma and his teammates.

Mbesuma caused a number of problems but failed to make his side’s bright start count on the scoreboard as Chiefs did just enough to go into the break on level terms.

The Glamour Boys came out firing in the second 45 and had a number of half chances but like their hosts in the first half, lacked the killer instinct with the shot or final ball into the box.

In the 65th minute, William Twala was brought down in the box by Leonard and Lebese stepped up to the task with the weight of his side’s dismal form on his shoulders but he made no mistake as he fired his side in front, a lead they would not let slip as they secured a vital win.

At Goble Park, Golden Arrows scored in the referee’s time added on to secure three valuable league points against Free State Stars.

It was Lehlohonolo Nonyane who grabbed the winner, who earned his side the win but in truth, his teammate and goalkeeper Maxmilian Mbaeva did equally well as he made two vital first half saves.

Lerato Lamola failed to head home in the 55th minute as the match seemingly moved towards a goalless draw before Nonyane’s intervention.

The win is Arrows second of the campaign while Free State Stars remain without a win this campaign.
