SuperSport United youngster Khanyisa Mayo has touched down in Portugal where he will join giants Benfica on a trial basis in an attempt to impress the side. 

The 18-year-old Mayo attracted attention at the Durban U-19 Tournament recently as he netted six goals in the tournament en route to claiming the Golden Boot, while he was also voted the best player in the tournament.

Mayo’s exploits helped the side all the way to the final before they were defeated by defending champions Arsenal.

‘He’s gone to SL Benfica on trial and he left on Saturday,’ SuperSport CEO Stan Matthews told KickOff.

‘We will see how he does and it is an exciting opportunity for him. We told him he’s not under any pressure and he must enjoy the process. It is not a make-or-break situation for him, it is part of his learning process. If they want him we will be the happiest people ever for him.’

Matthews explained Mayo will be given time to prove himself and at just 18-years of age needed feel too much pressure to perform.

‘But there is lot of water to pass under that bridge and we will get the feedback first. We told him it is not a pressured situation. He’s got time on his side and he’s got a future ahead of him,’ Matthews said.

‘If he doesn’t make it he will go again in six months and another six months, and the next year or two. For sure he will make his way where he’s supposed to be, playing at the level that he’s supposed to play. I’m pretty sure that he will be successful.’

Mayo is the son of former Kaizer Chiefs star Patrick Mayo.
