SASoccermag selects the Premier League Team of the Week as Maarten Stekelenburg and Junior Stanislas dominated on opposite ends of the pitch.
Team of the Week formation: 4-2-3-1
Goalkeeper: Maarten Stekelenburg (Everton)
Stekelenburg had arguably the game of his life on Saturday as his superb form almost single-handedly earned his side an unlikely draw against league-leaders Manchester City. In addition to making numerous strong saves, Stekelenburg denied first Kevin de Bruyne and then Sergio Aguero from the penalty spot.
Left Back: Jose Holebas (Watford)
Holebas enjoyed a fine individual performance as he scored the only goal of the game in a cagey clash with Middlesbrough. Aside from scoring the winning goal, the defender helped blunt Boro’s progress going forward as they struggled to impose themselves upon a well-organised Watford defence.
Centre Back: Steve Cook (Bournemouth)
In what was a superb performance by a whole host of Cherries players, Cook made his presence felt at the back as his physicality and excellent shadowing of the Hull City attackers helped keep their threat to a minimum. Although unlucky to have a half-blocked effort deflect into his side’s net, Cook was unperturbed, scoring his side’s second with a powerful header.
Centre Back: Ashley Williams (Everton)
On a day when centre back partner Phil Jagielka struggled, Ashley Williams stepped up to the task of dealing with the trickery and intricate passing of Pep Guardiola’s side and did so to excellent effect. Tough, watchful, and athletic, Williams did not miss a trick at the back and led by example as his side fought out a draw.
Right Back: Adam Smith (Bournemouth)
Smith was another of the Bournemouth stars who hit form as the side ran riot, proving mobile up and down the right flank. The defender not only helped cut out Hull attacks with ease but also helped carry his side forward and build attacks from the back. Smith also provided an assist as his fine cross was turned home.
Centre Midfield: N’Golo Kante (Chelsea)
Kante showed his old club Leicester City exactly what they’ve been missing this season as his irrepressible running and work rate gave Chelsea the edge in midfield. Dynamic and forceful, Kante gave the Foxes no time to rest on the ball and excelled in his role of quickly transitioning Chelsea’s play.
Centre Midfield: Joe Allen (Stoke City)
Joe Allen was once again influential for Stoke as they finally recorded their first win of the season. Present at the heart of all that was good for Stoke, the midfielder was neat and tidy in possession as he helped dictate the pace of the game, while he also continued his fine goalscoring form as he netted yet again.
Left Wing: Junior Stanislas (Bournemouth)
The driving force in the Cherries’ dominating victory was no doubt Junior Stanislas. Scoring his first from the penalty spot, the wing was on hand to notch his second when he finished off an excellent team move. Indeed, the star stamped his authority all over the contest, helping to set up a further two goals as his side tore Hull to pieces.
Attacking Midfield: Mesut Ozil (Arsenal)
Ozil was excellent yet again for Arsenal as he celebrated his birthday by firing home a superb strike. Incisive and influential with his passing, the German showed he was willing to dig deep as Arsenal went a man down following Granit Xhaka’s dismissal, but held on to record a hard-fought victory.
Right Wing: Theo Walcott (Arsenal)
Walcott continued his remarkable revival this season as he pinched two goals in Arsenal’s win over Swansea City. Showing a spark that has long been missing from his game and a renewed killer instinct, Walcott’s contribution proved crucial in propelling Arsenal over the line in what was a difficult second half.
Striker: Charlie Austin (Southampton)
Austin continues to prove himself as one of the Premier League’s best finishers as he netted a brace in his side’s 3-1 victory over Burnley. Robbed of a goal by a fantastic save in the first half, Austin’s movement created problems all afternoon as he netted for his side early in the second half before adding a second from the penalty spot.
