Cape Town City welcomed Bloemfontein Celtic to the Mother City on Wednesday as they struck twice in the dying minutes of added time.

The Telkom Knockout clash got off to a relatively cagey start as City looked to dominate the ball without creating too much of a scoring threat.

The first chance of the game came to Celtic’s Musa Nyatama. The midfielder failed to take advantage of the opportunity, however, as his weak shot was easily gathered with 11 minutes gone.

Celtic began to enjoy more possession as the half wore on but both sides continued to find scoring chances hard to come by. The next effort came the way of City as Ebrahim Seedat delivered a cross in towards Judas Moseamedi, who just failed to make contact with 29 minutes played.

Moseamedi again failed to get a proper connection on ta cross six minutes later as Matt Sim’s delivery that went begging. The Australian soon had a chance of his own, however, firing wide after being played in by Thabo Nodada.

For all City’s pressing, the score at half-time remained level at 0-0.

The second stanza got off to a laboured start as neither side created any early chances. Then, with 56 minutes gone, Menzi Masuku wasted a chance as he fired wide.

Celtic had a rare opportunity through Abdul Razak in the 78th minute as the striker just failed to connect with a cross.

With neither side able to score by the completion of the 90 minutes, the game went to added time.

The best chance in the first period of extra time came as City’s Dennis Masina was denied, his headed effort well saved by Shu-Aib Walters in the Celtic goal.

Then, with just eight minutes of extra time remaining, Celtic’s Mbhazima Rikhotso was dismissed from the field having received a second bookable offense. City didn’t take long to make them pay as Masina finally broke the deadlock with a calm finish.

Just three minutes later City put the game to rest as Kabelo Mahlasela was unfortunate enough to put th.e ball into his own net.

The goal concluded the scoring on the night as City closed out a late 2-0 victory.
