Pat Perez shot 67 on Sunday at El Cameleon Golf Club to win the OHL Classic by two strokes, ending a seven-year title drought.

‘When you hit 40 and then you have surgery, it’s like “What are we going to do?”’ Perez said. ‘I had sleepless nights, I had a lot of sleepless nights.

‘In a lot of ways, when you win you’ve got to have a lot of things go your way,’ he added. ‘You’ve got to make a lot of putts, you need some help from other players. It’s everything. It’s so hard to win. But I just had this different look about it this week and I’ll hopefully carry that through for a while.’

The world number 106 moved into position with a Saturday 62 at the Greg Norman-designed layout, and was two strokes behind Gary Woodland heading into Sunday.

Perez rallied on the front side and made five birdies to turn in 32, which was too much for his rivals. The 40-year-old made the clubhouse on 21 under par and the score held.

Scotland’s Russell Knox took third place after shooting 66 on Sunday, while Kevin Streelman, Chez Reavie and Scott Piercy tied for fourth place on 17 under par.

Tyrone van Aswegen had a chance going into the weekend after he opened with rounds of 68 and 67, but he struggled on Sunday with 73 and tied for 50th place.
