A plane carrying more than 80 passengers including Brazilian side Chapecoense has crashed on its way to the city of Medellin in Colombia, according to reports.

It has been reported that there were only six survivors after the plane crashed due to the plane having electrical problems.

The plane was carrying members of the Chapecoense, who were set to play in the final of the Copa Sudamericana against Medellin team Atletico Nacional.

The first leg of the final of the cup was scheduled to take place on Wednesday but the match has now been suspended.

The team, who won promotion to Brazil’s first division in 2014, reached the final last week after their victory against Argentine side San Lorenzo.

Reports say the British Aerospace 146 short-haul plane, operated by Bolivian charter airline Lamia and carrying 72 passengers and nine crew, crashed in a mountainous area outside the city shortly before midnight, according to BBC.com.

The Mayor of the City of Medellin, Federico Gutierrez has described the plane crash as ‘a tragedy of huge proportions’.
