Mamelodi Sundowns, Pitso Mosimane and Denis Onyango scooped major awards at the 2016 Caf awards in Abuja, Nigeria on Thursday night.
Sundowns were honoured as the African Club of the Year after their historic Caf Champions League triumph with their coach, Pitso Mosimane, claiming the Coach of the Year after his side claimed domestic and continental honours.
Sundowns’ goalkeeper Denis Onyango edged teammate Khama Billiat to win the CAF Player of the Year – Based in Africa. Onyango won 252 votes compared to Billiat’s 228. AS Vita star Rainford Kalaba was third with 206 votes cast in his favour.
Riyad Mahrez scooped the night’s major award beating Dortmund forward Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang to the title of African Player of the Year. The Algerian playmaker, who won the league with Leicester City, claimed 361 votes while Aubameyang earned 313 votes. Senegal and Liverpool star Sadio Mane came third with 186 votes.
