Goals by Danny Welbeck and Theo Walcott helped Arsenal claim a 5-0 thumping over Southampton in their FA Cup fourth round at St Mary’s Stadium on Saturday evening.
The Gunners off to a good start in the opening exchanges of the match and broke the deadlock in the 15th minute when Lucas Perez played Welbeck through on goal before he lifted the ball over Saints goalkeeper Harry Lewis to make it 1-0.
However, the Gunners extended their lead in the 22nd minute when Welbeck’s strike found the back of the net after he latched onto a long ball from Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain.
Arsene Wenger’s side then scored their third goal in the 35th minute when Welbeck picked out Theo Walcott, who put the ball into the back of the net from six-yards out.
In the first 45 minutes, Southampton struggled to carve out any clear-cut opportunities at goal as the scoreline remained 3-0 in favour of Arsenal, heading into the half-time interval.
The Gunners added a fourth goal in the 69th minute when substitute Alexis Sanchez set up Walcott, who fired the ball into the net from 12-yards out to complete his brace.
However, the Gunners victory was all but sealed when Walcott completed his hat-trick in the 84th minute when he latched onto a cross from Sanchez cross before putting the ball into the back of the net, as Arsenal advanced into the fifth round of the FA Cup.
