John Rahm fist pumped throughout Sunday at the Farmers Insurance Open, but his biggest celebration followed an eagle at the 18th for his breakthrough PGA Tour victory.

‘I can’t explain what went through my mind. I saw the replay and my reaction and I don’t even remember doing what I did. It’s hard to explain, but to get in that position is so hard and I’m blessed,’ he said.

The Spaniard needed 30 shots to complete the back nine at Torrey Pines and marched to a three-stroke victory on 13 under par.

‘I’m just starting my PGA Tour career and this is my third time having a chance to win. The difference is experience. In the past both me and my caddie were complete rookies on the golf course.

‘Today I was just focused on making putts. I was able to execute the shots and think clearly all the time, thanks to the past,’ he said.

Charles Howell III and CT Pan shared second place on 10 under par, while stalwarts Justin Rose and Keegan Bradley were part of a five-way tie for fourth place.

Rory Sabbatini found his stride in a final round of 67 that included four birdies in the last six holes, which elevated him to tied-14th.

Tyrone van Aswegen shot 68 on Friday and was well placed going into the weekend, eventually grinding out a six under par total to share 20th place.

Louis Oosthuizen tied for 47th in his first PGA Tour event of 2017, while Retief Goosen and Brandon Stone both missed the cut.
