The Proteas women continued their unbeaten run, beating Bangladesh by six wickets in their World Cup Qualifier on Saturday.
This was the SA ladies’ third win, which placed them at the summit of Group B with six points and the right to book their spot in the Super Six stage of the tournament.
Bangladesh put up a dismal fight, recording four ducks in their innings. Shabnim Ismail (3-14) and Suné Luus (3-17) were SA’s main performers with Dane van Niekerk (2-22) and Marizanne Kapp (1-11) playing their part in skittling their opponents for 100.
The Bangladesh captain, Rumana Achmed, tried to save her side with a brave 39 off 93 balls, but she was the only batsman to score above 20 for her side with Sanjida Islam and Salma Khatun scoring 13 and 16 respectively.
The Proteas women replied well with a 50-run partnership off 10 overs between Lizelle Lee (34 off 32) and Laura Wolvaardt (30 off 68). Bangladesh fought back with two quick scalps. Lee was the first to fall, off the bowling of Ahmed, and Mignon Du Preez (0) was next to go off the bowling of Salma Khatun.
The Proteas suffered a slight scare after being stuck on 81 runs for two overs and losing two wickets. Trisha Chetty (14) was bowled by Jahanara Alam, followed by Wolvaardt who was bowled by Suraiya Azmin.
The damage was already done at this point as Kapp (5) and Chloe Tryon (14) took their side over the line to end on 101-4, winning the match comfortably by six wickets.
The Proteas will face Papua New Guinea in their next encounter on Tuesday in their final match in Group B.
