Manchester United claimed a 2-0 victory over Watford while Everton and Middlesbrough played out to a goalless draw in the Premier League on Saturday.
Watford came out the better side in the opening 20 minutes as Jose Holebas and Mauro Zarate went close to opening the scoring with their efforts on goal.
However, United eventually broke the deadlock in the 37th minute when Juan Mata latched onto a cross from Anthony Martial to make it 1-0.
The Red Devils came close to doubled their lead on the stroke of halftime but Gomes was on hand to deny Henrikh Mkhitaryan’s strike at goal.
United doubled their lead in the 60th minute as Mkhitaryan played Martial through on goal and the Frenchman calmly slotted home.
Gomes came to the Hornets rescue to keep the scoreline at 2-0, as he produced a number of fine saves in the closing stages.
However, Jose Mourinho’s side held onto their 2-0 lead until the final whistle of the match to walk away with all three points at Old Trafford.
Meanwhile, Everton and Middlesbrough played out to a goalless draw at the Riverside Stadium, while Stoke City claimed a 1-0 victory over Crystal Palace at the Britania Stadium through a goal by Joe Allen.

West Ham United and West Bromwich were forced to settle for a 2-2 draw at the London Stadium in the Premier League to walk away with all three points.
