Platinum Stars coach Cavin Johnson says he was more than delighted with his side’s 1-0 victory over Unioa Do Songo in the Caf Confederations Cup on Saturday.A goal by Robert Ng’ambi separated the two sides as Dikwena claimed the victory in the first leg of the preliminary round of the 2017 Caf Confederation Cup.

The 58-year-old coach believes his side should’ve won by a bigger margin, but their lack of composure in the final third let them down.

‘We should have scored a lot of goals. We had a lot of chances, but we couldn’t put them away. We tried to play football and they didn’t try to play football. They tried to defend and play on counter,’ Johnson told the  Platinum Stars website.

‘Somebody created this methodology in world football and it stuck. It’s ugly. You sit back and defend and wait to beat people on counter-attack. That’s not football. It’s like you only have drummers in music. There’s nobody singing or nobody playing the guitar.

‘It doesn’t go well because you don’t know who you are playing against. They are not coming at you. That’s not a good advert for football. People can argue with me and says it’s tactics, but we have developed a wrong mentality.’

Johnson says he is delighted with the result, but will be hoping his side can put the game to bed in the second leg to book their place in the next round of the African tournament.

‘We are happy we got the results. We will go to Mozambique and we will attack them. I believe that they are a team, when playing football, they will leave spaces open and we will be able to score,’ He added.

‘We will fight to maintain the 1-0 lead, but to be ultra-defensive is not us. I want to go to the next round knowing that we played the Platinum Stars philosophy.’

Platinum Stars will now travel to the Peter Mokaba Stadium when they take on Baroka in the Absa Premiership on Wednesday.

Kick-off has been set for 19:30.
