Cape Town City made light work of Baroka to climb up to second place on the Absa Premiership log standings, after a 3-0 win at the Peter Mokaba Stadium on Sunday afternoon.
Lehlohonolo Majoro bagged a brace for the Citizens, with Sibusiso Masina also getting his name on the score-sheet as the Cape club continued their good run of form.
Baroka have, as a result, now gone 13 matches without victory in South Africa’s top-flight.
The first chance of the match fell to the hosts, with Nyasha Munetsi squandering a golden chance to give Baroka the lead in the sixth minute; the Zimbabwean seeing his header attempt from point-blank range go wide of goal.
Bakgaga were made to rue the missed chance, with City taking the lead in the 13th minute. After Thamsanqa Mkhize rattled the woodwork, the visitors remained alert, with Aubrey Ngoma pouncing on the loose ball before playing in Majoro – the former Orlando Pirates man with a composed finish, 1-0.
Lebogang Manyama went within inches of doubling the visitors’ lead seven minutes later, but Oscarine Masuluke was on hand to keep out his deflected effort.
Masuluke was tested once more with 36 minutes on the clock, this time diving to his right to stop Ngoma’s free-kick from finding the back of the net.
Chances continued to come at either end of the park, with Siphamandla Sangweni rattling the side-netting before Masuleke denied Ngoma once more. This time the towering shot-stopper acted with a superb reflex save to keep out Ngoma’s volley on the cusp of halftime.
Majoro completed his brace five minutes following the interval. Ngoma the provider once more; his cross from the left flank picking out the City forward who nodded home from close range.
The Citizens made it 3-0 in the 52nd minute. A carbon copy of the Cape club’s second – Edmilson Dove with the cross this time and Masina with the header finish.
With 10 minutes remaining, Eric Tinkler had already decided to pull off the dangerous trio of Majoro, Manyama and Ngoma, with one eye on the upcoming game against Mamelodi Sundowns.
Mzwanele Mahashe thought he had pulled a goal back for the hosts with five minutes remaining when he had the beating of Shu-Aib Walters, but the attempt was rightfully chalked off with the midfielder well offside.
City saw out the rest of the game in relative ease – at the same venue where they won the Telkom Knockout title late last year – as they claimed their 10th win of the campaign.
