Defending champions SuperSport United advanced to the quarter-finals of the Nedbank Cup following their 2-0 victory over KwaDukuza United at the Sugar Ray Xulu Stadium on Tuesday.

The home side got off to a good start and tested United goalkeeper Ronwen Williams into a fine save from inside the box in the opening exchanges of the match.

SuperSport started seeing more possession of the ball with the likes of Morne Nel, Aubrey Modiba and Mandla Masango controlling the middle of the park.

However, Stuart Baxter’s side eventually broke the deadlock in the 36th minute when Thuso Phala’s picked out an unmarked Masango, who headed the ball into the back of the net from close range.

SuperSport nearly doubled their lead in the 59th minute when Jeremy Brockie forced KwaDuza goalkeeper Nimrode Tsengwa into produced a fine save to deny the New Zealand striker.

KwaDukuza managed to carve out chances in the final third but failed to make the most of their opportunities.

SuperSport continued to press forward in search of a second goal and were rewarded in the 85th minute when Modiba fired the ball into the back of the net from close range to make it 2-0.

Baxter’s side were dealt a major blow in the closing stages of the match when Thabo Mnyamane was shown a straight red card.

However, SuperSport held onto their 2-0 lead until the final while to book their place in the quarter-finals of the Nedbank Cup.

Meanwhile, Platinum Stars advanced to the next round of the competition following their 1-0 win over Baroka when Ndumiso Mabena found the back of the net in the dying minutes of extra-time.

While Jomo Cosmos stunned Bidvest Wits to book their place in the next round of the competition following their 5-4 victory on penalties at the Tsakane Stadium.
