The two South African franchises axed from Super Rugby could compete in another major international competition from 2018.
SA Rugby president Mark Alexander says the organisation is in ‘advanced talks’ with two tournaments in different regions.
‘The whole plan is to ensure that the two teams [axed from Super Rugby] will take part in other competitions from 2018,’ Alexander told Netwerk24. ‘We do not want to condemn them to the wilderness. So if all goes well, all [six South African] teams will participate in an international tournament.’
The most likely scenario would see the two axed SA franchises joining the Celtic Pro12, which includes teams from Ireland, Wales, Scotland and Italy.
