Dylan Frittelli grabbed a share of the lead after keeping his cool at the Maybank Championship on Saturday as he carded a bogey-free 66 to get to -15, writes WADE PRETORIUS.
It was another action-packed day at the Saujana Golf & Country Club. where as many as 13 players shared the lead at some point on Saturday but it was Frittelli and Jorge Campillo, who matched his co-leaders’ effort with a 66 of his own, who hold the advantage with 18 to play.
It was Frittelli’s worst day from tee to green statistically – he hit just 9 fairways and 14 greens – but his putter did the trick and then some as he stroked just 27 putts (30 on Thursday and Friday) on moving day to keep himself blemish-free.
The South African missed both of the opening greens but saved par twice and finally got going when he made a one-putt birdie on the par 5 5th. He quickly followed that up with a birdie on the 6th and got to -3 for the day when he converted his chance on the 9th.
Frittelli saved par on the 10th and consolidated that with another par on the 11th before rolling in his birdie try on the 12th. He made a 3 at the 14th for the first time this week before a string of pars saw him arrive on the 18th tee at -5.
The 27-year-old former Texas University alumni didn’t miss out on his chance to get into a share of the lead as he found the green in two and calmly two-putted for his sixth birdie of the day.
