A brace by İlkay Gündogan and further strikes by Bernardo Silva and Sergio Aguero gave Manchester City a resounding 4-0 victory against Basel in their Champions League clash on Tuesday night.
The clash got off to a cagey start with City dominating possession stakes early on, while Basel appeared content with defending deep and playing on the counter.
Pep Guardiola’s side broke the deadlock in the 14th minute when midfielder Gundogan rose highest to head home.
The Citizens doubled their lead four minutes later as Bernardo Silva’s left-footed effort gave goalkeeper Tomas Vaclik a problem, following a fine cross by Raheem Sterling.
Sergio Aguero got his name on to the scoresheet five minutes later, bagging his 29th goal in all competitions with a trademark finish in the area.
The Premier League outfit were hardly tested by Basel and resumed their dominancce in the second half, with Gundogan grabbing his brace with a curling effort into the top corner.
City saw off the remainder of the clash with ease as they romped Basel 4-0 to take a healthy lead heading into the return-leg at home in March.
