Kaizer Chiefs coach Steve Komphela says he is happy his side progressed to the Nedbank Cup quarter-final after a hard fought 2-1 victory over Stellenbosch FC.

Goals in either half by Erick Mathoho and Leonardo Castro cancelled out Alan Robertson’s 76th minute strike, which proved to be a consolation goal.

Komphela admits that the National First Division side put up a real fight, but laments his side’s inability to convert their chances from close range.

‘We are delighted to progress to the next round,’ Komphela told his club’s official website.

‘It wasn’t a walk in the park.

‘Stellenbosch came out and really made a fight of it. However, before their goal, we had a couple of chances to bury the match, including Teenage Hadebe’s header. That was a clear-cut chance, but we failed to finish from close range.’

The Amakhosi mentor says he was pleased to see Bernard Parker and Castro combining up front, which ultimately led to their second goal.

‘There were a lot of positives to build on,’ he added, ‘Even Castro’s goal came from Parker’s touch.’

‘We will take this win to the next match, because after a win one goes to the next match with less pressure.’

Kaizer Chiefs will be hoping to continue their winning momentum when they host AmaZulu in their Absa Premiership encounter at the FNB Stadium on Saturday, with kick-off set for 18:00.
