The Blitzboks scored six tries to hammer South Korea 45-0 on day one of the Hong Kong Sevens on Friday. MARIETTE ADAMS reports.
With the first-choice squad and coach Neil Powell at the Commonwealth Games, stand-in coach Marius Schoeman set off to Hong Kong with a young, inexperienced and relatively unknown squad.
But the Blitzboks ‘B’ team were too good for the South Koreans in their first pool match.
Within the opening 40 seconds, Zain Davids stormed down the touchline to score the first try. Muller du Plessis and Ryan Oosthuizen (two) were next to get their names on the scoresheet as the Blitzboks raced to a 26-0 lead at half-time.
The South Africans maintained their clinical edge after the break, by scoring three more tries through debutants Heino Bezuidenhout, Mfundo Ndlovu and Dash Mafuma.
