Red Bull’s Daniel Ricciardo won the Chinese Grand Prix on Sunday after Max Verstappen and Sebastian Vettel collided.
Mercedes’ Lewis Hamilton finished fifth, but was promoted to fourth after Red Bull’s Verstappen was penalised for causing a collision with Ferrari’s Vettel, who finished eighth.
Vettel’s lead in the championship over Hamilton has been cut to 11 points.
‘I don’t seem to win boring races! It was unexpected!’ said Ricciardo.
‘Twenty-four hours ago I thought I would be at the back of the grid so firstly, thanks to the boys, today is the real reward for that work.
‘It was hectic, I heard about the safety car in turn 14 and they said come in,’ he added. ‘It all happened quickly. It was decisive and I got the win.’
On his overtakes, he said: ‘Sometimes you have got to lick the stamp and send it. We had the soft tyre so knew I could get more out of the breaking.’
