Peter Sagan edged Sonny Colbrelli in a reduced sprint finish to win stage two of the Tour de France on Sunday.

Stage one winner Fernando Gaviria crashed just 1.3km from the finish line, which Sagan and around 15 other riders avoided to set up a frantic finish.

‘I’m really happy for today and a big thanks to all my team-mates. They were in the front the last 30km and in the end, I expected something easier but up, down, turning right… and then it started to climb again,’ said Sagan.

‘[Arnaud] Demare went with [John] Degenkolb and I tried to take them. And thankfully Colbrelli couldn’t jump me.

‘The yellow jersey? For one day, I’m very happy.’

Defending champion Chris Froome avoided the pile-up to finish in the peloton.

Monday’s third stage is a 35.5km team time trial.
