Iran national team coach Carlos Queiroz’s recent resignation has sparked rumours that the former Manchester United assistant is set to return to the national setup.
Queiroz has had a checkered past with the number 29 ranked side and their federation and has made his final resignation following a row with a club coach.
‘The federation says it does not have the authority to implement the program of preparation to qualify for the 2018 World Cup that was agreed upon last year,’ Queiroz told the AP.
‘What then can I do?’
The Portuguese mentor guided Iran to their fourth appearance at the World Cup in 2014 and the team currently one point ahead of South Korea in Group A for Russia 2018 with five games remaining.
Queiroz was offended by comments made by Branko Ivankovic, coach of Iranian club Persepolis and a former national team coach, who complained about losing seven of his players mid-season.
All eyes have now turned to Safa amid reports Queiroz was in the country recently as they look to fill the void left by Shakes Mashaba.
One of Sir Alex Ferguson’s most famous assistants was hired by Safa in October 2000 and left in March 2002 after 24 games in charge. His record as national team coach finished with a 41% win record.
