Bafana Bafana coach Stuart Baxter believes his injury-hit side has what it takes to beat Nigeria.
Bafana face the Super Eagles in a crucial 2019 Africa Cup of Nations match at the FNB Stadium this Saturday, but Baxter is without a number of players who have done duty throughout the qualifying campaign.
Nigeria will also certainly be fired up for the clash after Baxter’s men unexpectedly defeated the west Africans 2-0 in Uyo last year in the first qualification game of Group E.
Heading into the encounter, both teams could seal their qualification for next year’s showpiece event in Cameroon, with Nigeria topping the group on nine points, while Bafana are second with eight.
Speaking in the buildup to the clash, Baxter insisted that his team does not fear the powerhouse of African football and he expects his team to compete despite the long injury list.
‘Everybody knows the list of injuries that we have had. Everybody knows what I said at the first media conference … despite that [the injuries], I want to speak about the players that we do have because even though we respect Nigeria, we do not fear them.
‘We have still enough talent‚ enough desire, and if we can structure a game plan in the next three or four days‚ I think by the time we run out into the FNB Stadium, we would be confident‚ we would not be complacent‚ because Nigeria have just come from a World Cup [in Russia].
‘They are undefeated since we beat them the last time and they will certainly want to wreak their revenge. So‚ we will be ready and I still believe that we have a very good chance of getting the result that we need,’ concluded the British coach.
