Bafana Bafana coach Stuart Baxter says he is delighted with his side’s ‘exceptional’ performance throughout the Four Nations tournament in Zambia.
The South African national team beat host nation Zambia 2-0 at the Levy Mwanawasa Stadium on Saturday to win the tournament, courtesy of goals from Percy Tau and Lebogang Mothiba.
Baxter says he was impressed with the youngsters, who did well to handle the pressure that comes with playing for the senior national team.
‘Our objective was to learn as much as we could about the players and this was a high-pressure game for them [the younger players]‚’ Baxter told the SowetanLive.
‘So I think they dealt with it well. Going forward, we have to try and get them more and more international experience.’
The Bafana Bafana mentor says the tournament gave him a chance to introduce the younger players, who he believes performed spectacularly on their way to lifting the trophy.
‘So we tried to deepen the squad and widen the pool with the players that we want to work with‚’ he added.
‘But you won’t do that unless you are prepared to take a chance on them. So I am delighted with their performance.’
