TFG SoccerClub analyses some of the best and worst Bafana Bafana performers from their 1-1 draw against Nigeria in their 2019 Africa Cup of Nations qualifier.

Best:

Percy Tau: 7/10

Was Bafana’s best player on the pitch by far. Showed his potential with a eye-catching moment of brilliance as he mesmerised the Nigeria defence before clamly laying it off to striker-partner Lebogang Mothiba. Deservedly won the man-of-the-match award.

Thamsanqa Mkhize: 6/10

The Cape Town City defender made his first appearance since last November and didn’t have the greatest of games by his standard. Offensively, he didn’t offer too much going forward, but was solid in defence especially in one-on-one scenarios.

Itumeleng Khune: 6/10

The Kaizer Chiefs shot-stopper had a relatively quiet game. Did show great awareness to rush off his line to deny a goalbound effort, however he could do nothing about the deflected goal.

Lebohang Mothiba: 6.5/10

Worked tirelessly in the Nigeria six-yard area and combined well with strike partner Tau. Took his goal well.

Worst:

Thulani Serero: 4/10

Much was expected of the Dutch-bound midfielder and he failed to deliver. Was largely anonymous in his first game back for Bafana in over a year. Proved ineffective in all areas of the pitch and was replaced by Thembinkosi Lorch in the second half.

Thembinkosi Lorch: 5/10

Came on a second-half substitute for the ineffective Serero, but proved just as ineffective. The Orlando Pirates attacker looked a shadow of the player that we see play week in and week-out for Pirates.

Thulani Hlatshwayo – 5/10

The Bafana captain was caught ball-watching and out of position one too many times against the Super Eagles. Did well to challenge for every ball and thwart out the aerial threats.

Hlompho Kekana: 5/10

Was nowhere near his influential self and was often outpaced by his Nigerian counterparts.
