Bafana Bafana coach Hugo Broos insists France played with “12 players” against them following Kylian Mbappe’s stellar performance in Lille on Tuesday evening.
South Africa were forced to endure a humiliating 5-0 defeat by the world champions following a brace by Mbappe and goals from Olivier Giroud, Wisaam Ben Yedder and Matteo Guendouzi at the Stade Pierre-Mauroy.
Following Mbappe’s performance against Bafana, Broos singled out the Paris Saint-Germain star and praised his quality and technical ability on the day.
“I was a little bit angry at my colleague that he started Mbappe today and not on Friday,” Broos said at his post-match media conference.
“He is a great player and there are much-better defenders who have suffered against him. You can’t really neutralise him.
“He’s quick, he’s technically good and he can score, so if you have such a player in your team, you play with 12. France is already so good and they played with 12 against us, so you know how difficult it was for us today.
“We knew coming into this game what we were coming up against. There was a difference of level between the two teams, but for us it wasn’t about the result, it was about the experience we have gained here today.
“We are a young team, therefore we don’t have the experience and quality of the French team. We tried our best today but the talent of our opposition was just too much, so we are not embarrassed by this scoreline.
“It was a wonderful experience for us as the players because we played the best players in the world. We can only get better as a team going forward.
“We do have a lot of positives from today’s game and the entire camp, so we will have to look at those as well while we also address the negatives as we prepare for the qualifiers in June,” he explained.
