Bafana Bafana midfielder Fortune Makaringe bemoaned his side’s inability to convert their chances after they crashed out of the Cosafa Cup.
Despite fashioning a number of good chances in their quarter-final match against Madagascar on Sunday afternoon, Bafana could not find the back of the net with their wastefulness leading to the game ending goalless.
Stuart Baxter’s men, as a result, were thrust into a penalty shoot-out where their ability to find the net was further tested. Again the national side fell short as penalty misses from Jamie Webber and Luther Singh then saw Bafana lose 4-3 in the shootout.
Bafana were subsequently knocked out of the Cup tournament and will now go into the plate semi-finals of the competition.
Makaringe, however, was a standout player on the day with his solid performance from the centre of the midfield saw him given the ‘Man of the Match’ award.
Speaking to SuperSport after the game the midfielder said, ‘I think we played very well as a team, but as a collective, we just couldn’t convert our chances.
‘It is unfortunate that we lost the game in a penalty shootout. But that is football, and football is football.
‘It doesn’t matter who you play with. If you master your basics and stick to what instruction you were given by the coach you will be successful.
‘At the end of the day, you are all playing football. It’s the same thing.’
Bafana will next be in action against Namibia in the plate semifinals of the Cosafa Cup on Tuesday, 5 June.
