Bafana Bafana striker Lyle Foster was relieved to have finally opened his account with his first goal for the South African national team.

The 21-year-old has represented South Africa on six occasions since his debut on 3 June 2018 at the age of 17 years and 9 months under then coach Stuart Baxter.

However, Foster only managed to open his scoring account for Bafana this past Thursday with the opening goal in their 2-1 defeat by Morocco in their Africa Cup of Nations opener.

The Westerlo striker silenced the home crowd when he beat Morocco goalkeeper Yassine Bounou with a well-taken low shot after receiving an inch-perfect pass from debutant Sphephelo ‘Yaya’ Sithole.

“It was nice to finally score my first goal for Bafana Bafana after some time,” Foster told Safa’s media team.

“It’s definitely a special moment for me, my family and my community but it was a bitter-sweet one because we didn’t end up winning the game. All in all, it was a nice moment for me but it would have been sweeter if we had got the three points.”

The former Orlando Pirates striker went on to praise Belenenses SAD midfielder Sphephelo Sithole after making his debut for the national team.

“Yaya was on my case the whole week, telling me that I need to score,” Foster added. “He was motivating me and telling me it was going to come, so it was nice that I got the assist from him.

“It was also a very special day for him to make his Bafana debut. He has been working hard for some time now and I’m proud of him for making his debut and having such a good game.”
