Bafana Bafana goalkeeper Itumeleng Khune is not getting carried away by his recent 80 cap milestone for the national team.
Khune’s 80th cap, which came in a superb performance by the stopper against Burkina Faso, put the star level with former Bafana striker Benni McCarthy’s appearance record.
Only the likes of Siyabonga Nomvethe (81), Siphiwe Tshabalala (88) and record holder Aaron Mokoena (107) still remain ahead of the goalkeeper in the all-time standings.
‘To be quite honest, I’m running my own race,’ Khune told KickOff. ‘I’m not comparing myself with anyone. It was a big honour for me to reach such a milestone and I want to continue working hard.
‘I told myself I want to be the best capped player in the country and I’m chasing that [Mokoena’s] record.’
In the meantime, an appearance for Bafana against Senegal in World Cup qualifying next month will see Khune surpass Tshabalala’s record as the most capped Chiefs player in history. Tshabalala has made 80 of his 88 appearances for Bafana while representing the Amakhosi, while Khune has only ever represented the Glamour Boys.
‘I always try to be at my best and I think I have done that in all the years,’ Khune concluded.
