Five Maritzburg United players have been called up to represent their national teams during the Fifa international break.
Among the players selected are Deolin Mekoa (SA), Evans Rusike, Blessing Moyo (Zimbabwe), Virgil Vries (Namibia) and Brian Onyango (Kenya), who have all been selected to represent their national team set up, according to the Maritzburg United website.
United’s marketing manager Brian Zuma believes that with five players representing their countries, it will give them the motivation and confidence needed to challenge in the Absa Premiership this season.
‘To have five players called up for National Duty is indicative of the quality we have in the team. With a few other players with Bafana Bafana experience in our current squad, we will be able to really compete this season,’ Zuma said.
Zuma went on to praise Mekoa after representing the South Africa U23 at the Rio Olympic Games and now receiving a call-up to the Bafana Bafana squad.
‘One player whose star shines particularly brightly is Deolin Mekoa. I mean Deolin recently returned from the Olympics with the U23 squad, now this call-up,’ he added.
‘With his head screwed in the right place, this boy’s future will be very rewarding.’
Maritzburg United will now return to the Absa Premiership when they take on Mamelodi Sundowns at the Harry Gwala Stadium on September 14.
Kick-off has been set for 19:30.
