Bafana Bafana defender Erick Mathoho says the team’s spirit is high following their convincing 3-1 victory over Guinea-Bissau on Saturday.
Goals from Kermit Erasmus, Percy Tau and Andile Jali helped the South African national team secure the win in an international friendly.
The 27-year-old says his side gained valuable experience from the outing.
‘It was a nice match. They gave us good competition. We learned a lot and picked up a few elements to enrich our preparation for future games,’ Mathoho told the Kaizer Chiefs website. ‘All the players enjoyed the game. The team spirit was high. We fought as a unit to win the match.’
Mathoho says Bafana Bafana did well to identify and deal with the threat Guinea-Bissau posed.
‘In the first 10 minutes, they gave us a problem in the middle of the park. However, we were quick to identify that and fix it. The same nearly happened towards the end, but again we handled them well.’
The Amakhosi defender is delighted with Bafana Bafana’s 16-match unbeaten run, but insists they are now focusing on their next international friendly match against Angola as they prepare for the upcoming World Cup qualifiers.
‘We are on an excellent run. The unbeaten record is great motivation,’ he added. ‘We are ready for the game against Angola. It’s our aim to use these friendlies to be ready for the upcoming World Cup qualifiers.’
Bafana Bafana’s international friendly against Angola at the Buffalo City Stadium is set to kick off at 18:00 on Tuesday.
