Bafana Bafana coach Molefi Ntseki has defended his decision to include Kaizer Chiefs goalkeeper Itumeleng Khune in his squad for the Africa Cup of Nations qualifiers.
The 32-year-old has only managed to feature four times for Amakhosi this season due to his long-term injury, appearing twice in the Absa Premiership and twice in the Nedbank Cup.
Khune’s selection for the national team made waves in the media with the reports questions whether or not earned a spot in the South African team, having last represented Bafana in 2018.
However, Ntseki, who visited Chiefs training ground said he was happy with Khune’s progress and admits that he was selected for the national team prior to visiting Naturena.
‘Itumeleng Khune is in the squad. We were at Chiefs with the Doc and we saw him in intense training and were very happy with what we saw,’ Ntseki told the media.
‘Even though we had already selected him before we went to [the] Chiefs training [grounds].’
‘With the goalkeepers, we don’t look at who was wearing the jersey last. We don’t look at who is playing or not in their team,’ added Ntseki.
‘It’s about the opposition, we profile the opposition and look at who best can do the duty against that specific team at that time.’
