Bafana Bafana forward Percy Tau has encouraged South Africa to keep their feet on the ground, following their historic 2-0 victory against Nigeria in a 2019 AFCON qualifier on Saturday.
Stuart Baxter got off to the perfect start to his second stint at the helm of Bafana when goals by Tokelo Rantie and Tau gave them their first-ever victory against The Super Eagles.
Despite their historic feat, the Mamelodi Sundowns man says the national team should not be too confident moving forward, in addition to praising his teammates for their performance.
‘We don’t want to be too confident just because we beat Nigeria,’ he told TMG Sport.
‘But I do think we should also give ourselves some credit. We worked hard for this win and we’re glad that we won against Nigeria.
‘We could have scored more goals. Overall we did so well. We’re South Africans. It’s about time we get the same respect,’ he added.
The 23-year-old highlighted that they didn’t show the Nigerians too much respect prior to the encounter, which helped them secure the victory.
‘We came here with the focus on ourselves. It was more on what can we do. And I think we did that so well.
‘We didn’t fear them. Maybe people at home were saying‚ ‘We’ve always lost to them’. But‚ I mean‚ we were just confident,’ he concluded.
Bafana face Zambia in an international friendly on Tuesday at the Moruleng Stadium in Rustenberg with kick-off set for 19h30.
