Cape Town City coach Eric Tinkler believes Stuart Baxter has the experience and history to become the new coach of Bafana Bafana, writes DYLAN APPOLIS.
The South African national team are currently on a 17-match unbeaten run in all competitions, since last suffering defeat at the hands of Angola in the African National Championship at the Rand Stadium on 17 October 2016.
The 49-year-old believes that the SuperSport United mentor is well equipped to take over as the new Bafana Bafana head coach, having previously coached the national side from 2004 to 2005.
‘It’s disappointing, the way it was resolved, but you kind of understand the situation, but I think it’s an important decision to make, getting the right person. It needs to be somebody with a track record and the history of that particular football background,’ Tinkler told the media.
‘There were a lot of names mentioned in the papers, who have never experienced it before, whoever they might be.
‘I know Stuart (Baxter) has been there, he has experience, and my personal opinion is that he will probably end up being the coach once all the issues with Safa are resolved.’
The South African national team recently dropped two places in the Fifa rankings, and have moved from 62nd to 64th. They are now ranked 12th in the African conference.
Bafana Bafana will be hoping to extend their unbeaten run when they take on Nigeria in the Africa Cup of Nations Qualification on 9 June 2017.
