Bafana Bafana players are backing Stuart Baxter to continue as the national team coach after he guided the side to the quarter-finals of the Africa Cup of Nations.

The former Kaizer Chiefs coach’s future with Bafana has been called into question after their participation in Egypt despite the side reaching the quarters for the first time since 2013.

South Africa exited the tournament after conceding a late goal against Nigeria on Wednesday and upon the side’s arrival back into the country players Dean Furman and Bongani Zungu have called on Baxter to remain in charge.

‘I’ve known the coach for a long time and know what he is all about,’ Furman told the Daily Sun.

‘This man is not given enough credit. I’m speaking on behalf of the players when I say that we hope he remains as the head coach of Bafana,’ he added.

Zungu echoed the thoughts of his vice-captain by insisting that Baxter understands the players and the South African mentality.

‘He [Baxter] understands us as players and he knows the mentality of South African football. We would like him to stay as players because he is a good coach,’ he added.

Baxter still has three years left on his current deal with the South African Football Association after he signed a five-year deal back in 2017.
