Sasol Banyana Banyana stormed into the semi-finals of the 2016 CAF African Women’s Cup of Nations on Friday after walloping the Pharaohs of Egypt 5-0 in their last Group A match in Limbe, Cameroon.
The current Banyana goal drought was well and truly broken with scores from Andisiwe Mcgoyi, Nothando Vilakazi, Refiloe Jane, Linda Motlhalo and Jermaine Seoposenwe.
This gave the South Africans all three points, not to mention a massive boost of confidence following a second-half goal glut which stunned the Egyptians.
Mcgoyi opened the scoring in the 28th minute when she managed to tap the ball into an empty net after some great play from the right wing by Nompumelelo Nyandeni to take a slender 1-0 lead at half-time.
Nyandeni, who played a big role in creating the opening goal, was substituted for Refiloe Jane in the 59th minute after a bad knock.
A minute later Nothando Vilakazi scored the second goal for the South Africans after some miscommunication between the Egyptian centre backs and her goalkeeper.
Refiloe Jane who had just got on to the pitch was granted a golden opportunity in the 62nd minute and did not hesitate when she put the ball in the back of the net for Banyana’s third goal.
Jermaine Seoposenwe also put her hand up and scored the fourth goal in the 67th minute.
Interim coach Desiree Ellis brought in youngster Amogelang Motau and Motlhalo late in the match, and Motlhalo didn’t take long before she scored the fifth and final goal for the rampant Banyana Banyana in the 82nd minute to register the biggest scoreline of the tournament so far.
‘I’m very happy with the performance today. The players knew what they had to do, I did not need to motivate them at all, we will play whoever qualifies between Ghana and Nigeria and see how far we go in the tournament,’ said an elated Ellis.
Sasol Banyana Banyana will only know their semi-final opponent on Saturday after the last Group B matches, where either Nigeria or Ghana will top the group.
The semi-finals will take place on Tuesday at Limbe Omnisports Stadium.
