Defending champions Banyana Banyana opened their Cosafa Women’s Championship campaign with a 17-0 thrashing of debutants Comoros at the Wolfson Stadium in Port Elizabeth on Wednesday.
The South African Women’s national team not only recorded the biggest-ever win in the Cosafa Women’s Championship by beating the 15-0 victory for Zimbabwe over Lesotho in 2002, but it is also South Africa’s largest-ever win in their history.
Captain Refiloe Jane stepped up and was the hero for Banyana as she netted four goals, while Amanda Mthandi grabbed a hat-trick, despite a host of key players being rested and without their numerous overseas-based stars.
Meanwhile, Hilda Magaia and Bambanani Mbane scored braces, and the other goals came from Tiisetso Makhubela, Ode Fulutudilu, Mamello Makhabane, Busiswe Ndimeni, Kholosa Biyana and an own goal from Comoros defender Hanifa Melanie completed Banyana’s record win in the tournament.
Banyana Banyana will be hoping to continue their momentum when they take on Madagascar on Friday, with kick-off set for 3:30pm.
