The Blitzboks registered an impressive 52-0 victory over Papua New Guinea at the Commonwealth Games on Saturday.

As far as statement performances go, this was one definitely a trademark one from the Blitzboks. Ruhan Nel and Rosko Specman starred with two tries each, but it was the two playmakers, Justin Geduld and Branco du Preez, who were most influential.

Papua New Guinea had no riposte for South Africa’s brute physicality, supreme sidestepping and confident offloading game.

A perfectly weighted cross-kick from Geduld was collected by Werner Kok, who scored the opening try. Specman was in next, as he was put into space after latching onto a floated pass from Geduld.

Nel then completed went over in quick succession to complete his brace. For his second try, Nel went direct, casually brushing off defenders before he touched down.

There was still time for one restart and that was all South Africa needed. Caught between two tacklers and the touchline, Dylan Sage bulldozed his way over in the corner without stepping over line. For good measure, Du Preez nailed the angled conversion to make it 33-0 at the break.

South Africa didn’t make the smoothest start to the second half. They conceded couple of penalties, but with defensive pressure, didn’t allow Papua New Guinea to exit their own half.

When the Blitzboks won back possession, Specman twisted and turned his way to score his second of the game.

Du Preez then crossed the line for a classic Blitzboks try. He started the move with a superb turnover in defence and went on to finish it off after the ball went through the hands of Cecil Afrika, Siviwe Soyizwapi and Tim Agaba, who all made brilliant offloads in the tackle.

Replacement Zain Davids accounted for the last try which brought up the 50-point margin after a floated pass was intercepted by Kyle Brown and popped to Davids, who did the rest.
