England have called up teenage leg-spinner Rehan Ahmed for their second Ashes Test against Australia as cover for Moeen Ali.

Ahmed, who was 18, was picked to play for England in Pakistan in December. He was the youngest person to ever play a Test match for England.

The player from Leicestershire made an impressive debut for Ben Stokes’ team in Karachi, where he took seven wickets in the match and five wickets and 48 runs in the second innings.

But in the second division of the County Championship this season, Ahmed has only taken six wickets in seven games, for an average of more than 67.

Australia won the first Test at Edgbaston by two wickets, but Moeen had a hard time because he had a blister on his finger.

The 36-year-old, who was playing in his first Test in two years, still hopes to be ready for the second game of the five-game series, which starts on Wednesday at Lord’s.

There is also a chance that England will choose a four-man seam attack with some spin from Joe Root.
