Will Pucovski and Marnus Labuschagne scored half-centuries as Australia got off to strong start against India in a rain-affected opening day’s play of the third Test.

Pucovski made the most of his Test debut by starting on the front foot at the top of the order. David Warner’s return to the side, however, didn’t last long when he was dismissed by Mohammed Siraj for only five.

But, only seven overs into the day’s action in Sydney, rain forced players from the field, causing a lengthy delay in play.

An early lunch was called before the covers eventually came off during the middle session of the day. Pucovski kicked on and shared in a 100-run partnership with Labuschagne, bringing up his very first half-century for the Baggy Greens.

The 22-year-old departed for a well-played 62 when he was trapped in front by India debutant Navdeep Saini.

Labuschagne then reached his 50 and alongside Steve Smith guided Australia to stumps on day one, with the score on 166-2.

Labuschagne will start Friday’s action unbeaten on 67 with Smith on 31.
