Siyabonga Mahima’s cricketing journey has taken him from the fields of Mpumalanga to the professional ranks with Goldrush Boland.
Beyond his prowess as a bowler, Mahima also has a vibrant personality with diverse tastes in music, movies, and entertainment.
In this light-hearted feature, he shares some of his favourite tunes, dream movie scenarios, and the artists that keep him grounded before stepping onto the cricket field.
If your cricket career had a soundtrack, which two songs would definitely be on it?
SM: Definitely “Humble” by Kendrick Lamar and “Started from the Bottom” by Drake. Kendrick’s song is a constant reminder to stay grounded in this game, and Drake’s track reflects the start of my career and how far I’ve come.
Who would play you in a movie about your life?
SM: It has to be Will Smith. He’s funny and full of energy, but at the same time, he can pull off serious roles. I think his versatility would match my personality – I can be laid back and fun off the field, but when it comes to cricket, I’m all business.
If you could have a jam session with any musician before a game, who would it be?
SM: That would be Mr. JazziQ. I’m a huge fan of Amapiano music, and he’s an awesome producer in that genre. His music sets the vibe, and he’s a fun guy, so it wouldn’t just be about the music; it would also be about having a good time and setting the right energy before a game.
If you could only listen to one song for the rest of your life, what would it be?
SM: Kendrick Lamar’s “The Blacker the Berry.” That song’s been with me since 2015 or 2016, and it’s deep. It reminds me of who I am, where I come from, and where I’m headed.
What’s one movie or TV series you wish your life was like?
SM: Jumper. It’s about a guy who can teleport to any place he’s seen. Imagine being able to just jump from one place to another – no need for transportation. It would be great for traveling the world without worrying about the costs or the hassle. Plus, I could bring someone along with me, which would be even better!
Mahima may be a serious cricketer on the field, but off it, he’s a passionate music lover with a big personality.
Whether it’s Kendrick Lamar keeping him humble or dreaming of teleporting like the main character in Jumper, Mahima’s eclectic tastes provide insight into the man behind the player.
As his career with Boland continues to evolve, it’s clear that Mahima brings his own unique rhythm to everything he does.
