Former South African spinner Johan Botha will coach the Multan Sultans in the the 2019 Pakistan Super League.
Botha will coach a Multans squad captained by veteran all-rounder Shoaib Malik. The franchise also boasts the services of several players from abroad, including West Indians Andre Russell and Johnson Charles – and Australian Dan Christian.
Botha previously coached the Guyana Amazon Warriors in the Caribbean Premier League.
‘I really enjoyed my time with the CPL as a player, and I can’t wait to get under way as a coach,’ he said prior to last year’s CPL.
‘The squad that the Amazon Warriors have put together for this year is really impressive, and I am sure we will be challenging for the title at the end of the season.’
Botha played five Tests, 78 ODIs and 40 T20Is between 2012 and 2015 before moving to Australia, where he played for the Adelaide Strikers and Hobart Hurricanes in the Big Bash League. He retired from playing all forms of professional cricket earlier this year.
The PSL will start on 14 February and end 17 March. The first leg of the tournament will be played in Dubai, Sharjah and Abu Dhabi, United Arab Emirates – and the second Lahore and Karachi, Pakistan. Islamabad United are the defending champions. They also won the inaugural title in 2016. Peshawar Zalmi triumphed in 2017.
