Hashim Amla’s 25th century saw the Proteas set a devastating 300-run target and claim 96-run victory in their Champions Trophy opener.

It was a masterful performance from the Proteas’ silent assassin, who paced himself throughout South Africa’s innings.

After losing Quinton de Kock cheaply in the 13th over on 23, Amla played an integral role to keep the Proteas in the game.

The 34-year-old opening batsman played a nifty innings with some classy stroke play, which saw him reach his fifty in 56 balls and set up a century second-wicket stand with Faf du Plessis.

Despite losing his partner Du Plessis after a 70-ball-75, Amla went on to score his ton off 112 balls (five fours and two sixes).

Beside’s being the fastest ODI batsman to 2,000, 3,000, 4,000, 5,000 and 6,000 and 7,000 runs, he now holds the record for reaching 25 (151 innings) centuries faster than any other batsman, beating Virat Kohli, who took 162 innings.

His performance was ended by an unnecessary run-out, but he played a pivotal role for the Proteas to achieve an opening win against Sri Lanka, as they posted 299-6, and bowled SL out for 203.
