Mohammad Rizwan and Abdullah Shafique led Pakistan to the highest run chase in the Cricket World Cup after they defeated Sri Lanka by six wickets in Hyderabad on Tuesday.
At 37-2, their goal seemed far away, but Abdullah Shafique and Muhammad Rizwan’s outstanding partnership of 176 off 156 balls set the stage.
After replacing Fakhar Zaman, Shafique scored 113 runs off 103 balls before being caught at point. However, Rizwan and Saud Shakeel went on to jointly score 95 runs for the fourth wicket.
Rizwan underwent treatment for a back injury and a calf cramp, but he bravely endured the discomfort.
The wicketkeeper scored the winning run and led his team home with Iftikhar Ahmed (22*) and Shakeel (31), with 10 balls remaining. He finished unbeaten on 131 from 121 balls.
Kusal Mendis scored a brilliant 122 off 77 balls for Sri Lanka, who finished with 344-9 from their 50 overs. Sadeera Samarawickrama also scored 108 off 89.
The game features four centuries for the first time in World Cup history.
Sri Lanka has lost both of its opening games, while Pakistan has won both of them.
In the other World Cup game on Tuesday, England defeated Bangladesh by a score of 137 runs to avenge their opening-game loss.
In Delhi on Wednesday, Afghanistan will play host nation India.
