Proteas bowler Dale Steyn has acknowledged that even if he recovers in time for the fourth Test against Australia, getting back into the team will be difficult.

Steyn has not played for the Proteas since injuring his heel during the New Year’s Test against India at Newlands in Cape Town.

The 34-year-old is not expected to be available for the third Test, which starts next Friday, and has now set his sights on making his big comeback in the fourth game of the series at the Wanderers in Johannesburg.

‘I’m doing really well, it’s a bit of a race against time to get ready for these Test matches,’ Steyn said in an interview with the SABC’s Kass Naidoo.

‘Now it seems, if I even win that race, it’s going to be difficult to even make the team because of the way some of these guys are playing. But I’m getting there,’ said Steyn.

Steyn has 419 Test wickets and needs just three more to overtake Shaun Pollock as South Africa’s leading wicket-taker.
