Proteas Test captain Dean Elgar says he and white-ball skipper Temba Bavuma have “an extremely good relationship”.

Elgar recently led the Proteas to a famous 2-1 Test series win over India in South Africa, before Bavuma captained the ODI team to a 3-0 series whitewash of the tourists.

As Test vice-captain, Bavuma will have an important leadership role in the upcoming two-match series against reigning Test world champions New Zealand.

“He’s a brilliant sounding board for me,” Elgar told Sport24. “I always go to him for advice and vice versa, which is something we need at this time because we don’t have the experience we used to have.

“We’ve got an extremely good relationship, and we deal with a lot of things off the field pretty well.”

Elgar said he and Bavuma went “quite a long way back” and are “very similar characters”.

“He’s a lot quieter than me, which is a good thing because he’s a deep thinker. But he can be feisty,” Elgar added.

“He’s a tough cookie; definitely not a pushover. Sometimes people think the quiet guys are easy to walk over, meanwhile, he just processes things in his own way.”
