West Indies batsman Chris Gayle will retire from ODI cricket after this year’s World Cup in the United Kingdom.
Gayle has struck 9,727 runs in ODI cricket – and will be afforded the chance to become the 14th player to gather 10,000 against England later this month.
‘Talismanic Windies batsman, Chris Gayle, has announced he will retire from one-day internationals following the ICC Cricket World Cup 2019 in England and Wales,’ read a statement from West Indies Cricket.
‘Gayle made the announcement just ahead of a Windies practice session leading up to the one-day international series against England at the Kensington Oval in Barbados. The “Universe Boss” was listed among the Windies squad for the first two ODIs to the delight of Windies fans who have anticipated his return to the maroon colours this year.’
The hard-hitting 39-year-old has played 284 ODIs, 53 as captain, and become renowned as a globetrotting Twenty20 cricketer. He has played in the Indian Premier League, Australia’s Big Bash League, South Africa’s Mzansi Super League, Pakistan Super League, Bangladesh Premier League and several other domestic T20 competitions around the world.
