Harshal Patel dismisses Rohit Sharma

Lethal bowling from the bottom-feeding Delhi Daredevils crushed the defending champions as the Mumbai Indians failed to chase down 175 and lost by 11 runs to end their playoff hopes.

The Delhi Daredevils, playing for pride, elected to bat first and posted 174-4. After losing three wickets for 75 runs, Rishabh Pant and Vijay Shankar resurrected their side’s innings with a 64-run partnership. Pant managed to hit a 44-ball 64 to help DD to 139 before he lost his wicket at the end of the 17th over to Krunal Pandya.

Shankar stuck around with Abhishek Sharma and the pair added 35, with Shankar ending not out on 43.

The Mumbai Indians, whose playoff hopes were riding on this match, had a similar start to their opponents but instead of being 75-3 by the end of the eighth over, they found themselves four down for 74, one ball into the ninth.

Evin Lewis scored 48 off 31 balls, but that was it. Sandeep Lamichhane was responsible for the Mumbai Indians’ destruction. The 17-year-old removed three key batsmen – Suryakumar Yadav (12), Kieron Pollard (seven) and Krunal Pandya (four) – and was partnered by Amit Mishra, who removed Lewis and Ishan Kishan (five). Together they managed to get MI down to 78-5.

Mishra struck again to get his third by removing Hardik Pandya for 27 after Rohit Sharma was dismissed by Harshal Patel (3-28), as MI struggled on 122-7 with just over five overs remaining.

A late blast from Ben Cutting gave MI hope – he hit a 20-ball 37 – despite Mayank Markande being toppled on three by Trent Boult, but Patel’s double in the final over sealed an 11-run victory for the Daredevils, as he took out Cutting and Jasprit Bumrah.

This knocked out the MI, who needed a win to advance to the playoffs.
